French Guiana : Economic overview

French Guiana is a single territorial collectivity of France and an outermost region of the European Union, with Cayenne as its capital. The territory covers 83,846 km², representing about 15% of France’s national territory, an area comparable to Austria. Located in the northeastern part of the South American continent, it borders Brazil and Suriname, and lies approximately 7,000 km from Paris.

A rich linguistic landscape includes French, various Creole languages, as well as Amerindian and Bushinenge languages. The official currency is the euro (€).

According to AFD estimates, French Guiana recorded a Human Development Index of 0.740 in 2010, ranking 73rd.

National representation includes two Members of Parliament, two Senators, and one representative on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by a Prefect.
