Payment methods

Bank card : Your everyday payment companion

In France, both on the mainland and in the overseas territories, the bank card is the most widely used method of payment for everyday transactions.

Whether you’re shopping in-store or online, or withdrawing cash from an ATM, your bank card enables you to make fast, convenient and secure transactions. Depending on your contract, your card may also offer extra services, such as travel insurance or assistance in case of an emergency.

Using your bank card

Your bank card is linked to your current account. You can use it for contact or contactless payments, depending on your needs and the spending and withdrawal limits set out in your contract.

Contactless payment

This service is ideal for small, everyday purchases and lets you pay up to €50 without entering your PIN. However, limits apply: for example, you cannot exceed €150 cumulatively, nor can you make more than five consecutive contactless payments. Once these limits are reached, you will need to enter your PIN to reset them.

Security and best practices

In the overseas territories, just like anywhere else, payments made with your bank card benefit from a high level of security. All transactions are processed through trusted banking networks.
In case of loss or theft, it is essential to block your card immediately to prevent any fraudulent use. Your bank will assist you with the necessary steps and can quickly issue a replacement card.

Here are some tips to help you secure your bank card transactions:

Be responsible

  • Your card is personal : never give it to anyone else, not even to someone close to you.
  • Stay alert : regularly check that your card is still in your possession.
  • PINs and security codes are confidential : never share your PIN or the three-digit security code on the back of your card.
  • Watch out for online scams : your bank will never ask for your codes by phone or email. Be cautious with phishing attempts and unsolicited emails or texts. Do not enter your banking details after clicking on a link in such messages. It’s safer to visit the official website directly.
  • Memorise your codes, do not write them down.
  • When entering your PIN, shield the keypad with your hand to protect it from prying eyes.
  • Protect your banking information : never share your account details over the phone unless you initiated the call. If in doubt, hang up.
  • Check your bank statements regularly to detect any suspicious transactions quickly.

Stay vigilant

At Merchants’ Locations :

  • Never let your card out of sight. Pay attention to how the merchant handles your card.
  • Always check the transaction amount displayed on the terminal before confirming your purchase.

At ATMs :

  • Inspect the ATM’s appearance. Avoid using machines that appear damaged or tampered with.
  • Stay focused while withdrawing cash. Do not let strangers distract you.
  • If your card is retained and you cannot retrieve it from the bank branch, block it immediately.

Online

  • Protect your banking data: don’t store your card number on your computer, avoid sending it via unsecured email, and check that the merchant’s website is secure (HTTPS, padlock icon in the browser bar).
  • Verify the merchant’s reliability: make sure you are on the official site and carefully read the terms and conditions before any transaction.
  • Enhance your computer’s security: enable software security updates, install reliable antivirus software, and set up a firewall.

Abroad :

  • Before your trip: Contact your card issuer to learn about available protection features and any recommended precautions.
  • What to bring: Keep the international contact numbers for card blocking services with you in case your card is lost or stolen.
