Martinique is an Overseas Department and Region of France (DROM) with Fort‑de‑France as its capital. The island covers 1,128 km² in the Lesser Antilles, located about 3,150 km from New York, 6,900 km from Paris, and 200 km from Pointe‑à‑Pitre.

The main languages spoken are French and Creole, and the official currency is the euro (€).

According to AFD estimates, Martinique ranked 54th on the Human Development Index in 2010.

National representation includes four Members of Parliament, two Senators, and one representative on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by a Prefect.
