Mayotte : Economic overview

Mayotte is an Overseas Department and Region of France, and has been an Outermost Region of the European Union since 1 January 2014. Its administrative capital is Mamoudzou, and the territory covers 375 km² in the Indian Ocean, located about 8,500 km from Paris, 1,500 km from Réunion, and 250 km from Madagascar.

The main languages spoken are French, Shimaoré, Shibushi, and various Comorian languages. The official currency is the euro (€).

In 2010, Mayotte ranked 107th on the Human Development Index.

National representation includes two Members of Parliament, two Senators, and one representative on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by a Prefect.
