Saint Pierre and Miquelon is an overseas collectivity of France with the status of an Overseas Country and Territory (OCT), and its capital is Saint‑Pierre. The archipelago covers 242 km² in the North Atlantic Ocean, located about 25 km from Newfoundland, 1,800 km from Montreal, and 4,300 km from Paris.

The official language is French, and the territory uses the euro as its currency.

According to AFD estimates, Saint Pierre and Miquelon ranked 66th on the Human Development Index in 2010.

National representation includes one Member of Parliament, one Senator, and one representative on the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, while the French State is represented locally by a Prefect.
